BOOK REVIEW: Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith

Published: 19th November 2009
Number of Pages: 96
Date read: Started February
During the process of this book you will get dirty. You may find yourself covered in paint, or any other number of foreign substances. You will get wet. You may be asked to do things you question. You may grieve for the perfect state that you found the book in. You may begin to see creative destruction everywhere. You may begin to live more recklessly.

(Excerpt taken from inside the book)

This hugely popular ‘book’ (and I use that term very loosely) is a must have for… EVERYONE! Any age, any gender & any personality type. You don’t have to be creative or skilled in any way, in fact the more spontaneous and heavy handed you are with this book the better!!

So was I initially… Because this journal could really be called an activity book or.a How to Challenge yourself book!! ! Step inside the destructive and thought provoking world of ‘Wreck This Journal’..

Written by acclaimed illustrator Keri Smith, this illustrative book contains hardly any words, there’s no chapters or storylines, instead each page encourages the reader to create a mess and literally ‘wreck’ the journal. Keri asks us to rip, scribble, glue, trace and sew the pages! Crumple, spill, stain, throw, lick, rub, scratch and even shower with the book!! And its so hard!! Letting go of the perfection of your new book is like pulling hens teeth! I started off by drawing carefully on the pages and using corresponding colours, drawing pretty flowers and swirls until I opened it up to a page that said I should ‘Rub here with dirt’ and realized I really needed to embrace this book and get out of my comfort zone!

Wreck This Journal is a fantastic creative tool, use it to unwind or explore your creativity. Challenge yourself and really let go! It’s harder than you think!

I give ‘Wreck This Journal’ five out of five stars!

Take a look at some of the ways people have 'wrecked' their journals!!

Now its your turn!
Send a photo of your favourite page in your 'Wreck This Journal' and I will add it to this page!!
